An approach to morality which holds that human beings should act in accordance with their natural purposes. In Catholic teaching, these purposes are understood as part of God’s created order.

Artificial contraception is rejected because it deliberately prevents sex from fulfilling its procreative purpose. This does not mean Catholic teaching expects every sexual act to result in pregnancy; rather, couples should not deliberately block its potential to create life.
