A sacred image or statue of a deity through which Hindus may focus devotion and worship.
Revise: BrahmanA murti, a sacred image or statue of a deity, provides a concrete focus for devotion. For example, Shiva as Nataraja, Lord of the Dance, holds a drum associated with the rhythm of time. This expresses divine power over time through a recognisable form and symbol.
Link belief to practice: meditation on aum can express a nirguna understanding, while worship through a murti can express a saguna understanding.
Do not describe a murti as merely a statue: explain its role as a representation of the deity and, for many Hindus, a place of divine presence.
Distinguish an avatara, a divine descent into living form, from a murti, an image or form used in worship.
