The menorah recalls the seven-branched lampstand of the Temple in Jerusalem. A representation in a synagogue links the building with the Temple and symbolises sacred light. Some communities, particularly Orthodox ones, use a six- or eight-branched lampstand to avoid making an exact copy of a sacred Temple object.
