Paper 3
A raised platform with a reading desk from which the Torah scroll is read during synagogue worship.
If asked for religious features of a synagogue, name fixtures or objects such as the bimah or ner tamid, rather than people or clothing worn during prayer.
Distinguish features from functions: the bimah is a feature; worship, study and community support are functions.

The bimah is a raised platform with a reading desk where the Torah scroll is placed for public reading. Its raised position helps the congregation see and hear the reading, making the Torah a shared focus rather than something studied only by an individual.
