Revise: Therapies for DepressionSelective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) are the most widely used antidepressants. Examples include fluoxetine and sertraline. They are usually the first type prescribed because their side effects are generally easier to manage and they are less likely than some alternatives to cause serious problems in an overdose.

Distinguish blocking receptors from blocking reuptake: antipsychotics reduce dopamine’s action at receptors, whereas SSRIs keep serotonin available in the synaptic gap for longer.
