Revise: Ethical GuidelinesEthical guidelines help researchers protect participants' rights, dignity and wellbeing. An ethical issue arises when a research procedure threatens these interests. Researchers need to consider such issues when planning a study, monitor participants during it and remain responsible for their welfare afterwards.
Apply an ethical issue to the procedure: explain what participants were not told, what might distress them or how they were misled.
A signed consent form is not enough if participants do not understand what they are agreeing to or feel pressured to participate.
When evaluating a safeguard, explain both how it protects participants and its limitation. Debriefing does not guarantee that harm has been undone.
