Revise: Ethical GuidelinesDebriefing takes place after participation. Researchers explain the true purpose of the study, disclose any deception and explain why it was used. Participants should be able to ask questions, correct misunderstandings and raise concerns.
Distinguish debriefing after participation from informed consent before participation. Debriefing cannot retrospectively make the original consent informed.
When evaluating a safeguard, explain both how it protects participants and its limitation. Debriefing does not guarantee that harm has been undone.
