Informed consent means freely agreeing to participate after understanding enough about the research to make a meaningful decision. Before participation, researchers should explain what the person will do, how long it will take, foreseeable risks or discomforts, how information will be protected and how to withdraw. The explanation must be understandable, and the person must be able to ask questions and refuse without pressure.
