GCSE Physics · key term
The extent to which an investigation tests the intended effect because other relevant variables have been controlled.
Used by AQA and OCR
Specification 4.1.2.1 · Paper 1
Revise: Required Practical: Investigating Thermal InsulationPrevent draughts and keep insulation dry and arranged consistently. These precautions improve validity by making the independent variable the only important difference between tests.
Paper 1, Paper 2
The extent to which an investigation measures what it is intended to measure and supports the claimed conclusion.
Revise: Apparatus Selection, Accuracy and Risk AssessmentValidity asks whether the method allows the intended conclusion to be drawn. Suppose an investigation is meant to test how one factor affects an outcome. The data are not valid evidence for that relationship if another changing factor could have produced the measured effect.
When discussing validity, link each feature of the method to whether the measured effect can genuinely be attributed to the factor being investigated.
