Specification 6.41P · Paper 1
Revise: Electricity GenerationThe water becomes high-pressure steam, which flows over turbine blades and makes the turbine shaft rotate.
Paper 1, Paper 2
A rotating machine driven by a moving fluid such as steam, air or water.
Revise: Methods of Generation and the National GridA turbine often provides that rotation. Its blades can be pushed by steam, wind or moving water. To compare generating methods, ask two questions: what turns the turbine, and is steam needed first?
Describe the full sequence from fission to electricity: reactor heat → steam → turbine → generator.
Do not say that steam generates electricity directly: it turns the turbine, which drives the generator.
When asked to compare methods, give a similarity as well as differences: for example, wind and fossil-fuel stations both turn a generator, but wind turns the turbine directly whereas a typical fossil-fuel station first produces steam.
