Revise: Heating a SystemA heating curve represents these two effects of heating. Sloping sections show the substance warming within one state: temperature and average kinetic energy increase. Horizontal sections show a pure substance changing state: temperature stays constant while its potential energy and internal energy increase.

When explaining a flat section of a heating curve, state where the transferred energy goes: it increases the particles’ potential energy as forces of attraction are overcome.
When explaining a flat section of a heating curve, state both ideas: energy is still being transferred to the substance, but its temperature remains constant while it changes state.
