The proportion of a defined population taking part in an activity, usually expressed as a percentage.

Revise: Physical activity and sport in the UKA participation rate tells us what proportion of a defined group takes part. For example, a rate of 30% means three in every ten people in that group participate. A trend describes change over time.
Distinguish the largest number of participants from the largest participation rate: groups can differ in size.
