Paper 2
Revise: Role of nutrients55–60% carbohydrate
Paper 2
A nutrient that is the main fuel source for exercising muscles. Sources include bread, rice, pasta and potatoes.
Revise: Diet and nutritionThere are seven components to know: carbohydrates, proteins, fats, minerals, vitamins, fibre and water. Eating a variety of foods helps provide them because no single food supplies everything the body needs.
When comparing fat with carbohydrate as an exercise fuel, include the qualification that fat provides more energy only at low intensity.
For a sporting application, link the nutrient to its function and then to a specific performance benefit: carbohydrate supplies energy, helping a footballer maintain repeated runs during a match.
Distinguish fuel from recovery: carbohydrate is the main fuel for exercising muscles; protein supports muscle growth and repair.
