In 2023, the BBC announced that Desert Island Discs would move from its public service production division to BBC Studios, its for-profit subsidiary. The intention was to increase revenue by reaching listeners outside the UK, against a background of falling Radio 4 listening figures. This was an intended commercial benefit, not proof that the move had already increased income.
