Revise: Charts for Discrete and Time Series DataA time-series graph can show rises, falls, peaks, troughs and an overall trend. In the illustrative sales data, sales fluctuate: they fall from February to March and from May to June. Nevertheless, the later figures are generally higher than the earlier ones, so the overall trend is upward.
Check the data type before choosing a diagram: a vertical line chart needs ungrouped discrete numerical values, whereas a time-series graph needs observations recorded over time.
For a time-series graph, put time on the horizontal axis, use a sensible uniform scale and plot every point accurately before joining consecutive points.
