Paper 1
Revise: Case Studies: Gunpowder Plot and Witch-huntsThe witch-hunts show how religious beliefs and insecurity could turn accusations against neighbours into criminal prosecutions.
Paper 1
A campaign against people suspected of wrongdoing in which suspicion and accusations take the place of reliable evidence and fair investigation.
Revise: The Rise and Fall of McCarthyismThis explains why these investigations were described as witch hunts. The central problem was not simply that Communism was investigated, but that accusation and intimidation could replace reliable evidence and fair treatment. Supporting liberal reforms, belonging to a trade union or expressing sympathy for the poor could be treated as grounds for suspicion.
