Paper 1, Paper 3
Revise: Political and Social Divisions: Vietnam and the Great SocietyWelfare reform raised arguments about taxation and government responsibility, while the war generated conflict over military service, protest and whether political leaders could be trusted.
Support intended to meet people’s needs and improve their wellbeing, such as poverty relief, housing assistance or advice about tenants’ rights.
Link each example to a division: Chicago exposed conflict over protest and policing; welfare debates exposed disagreement over poverty, taxation and government responsibility.
Explain how Vietnam affected domestic politics as well as foreign policy: it divided the Democrats, weakened trust in government and competed with welfare programmes for funding.
Treat claims that welfare encouraged dependency as arguments made by critics, not as established facts.
