Revise: Social Policy and PracticeAfter taking power in 1933, the Nazis tried to change more than Germany’s government. They wanted family life, education and religion to serve their dictatorship. Their ideal was a Volksgemeinschaft, or national community, united behind Hitler.

The Nazi ideal of a National Community united by loyalty to the nation and Hitler rather than by class, region or religion. Membership depended on Nazi racial ideas, so it deliberately excluded some people.

Their ideal was the Volksgemeinschaft, or National Community: a nation in which differences of class, region and religion would give way to shared loyalty to Germany and Hitler. Workers, employers, mothers and children were each expected to serve the nation in an assigned role.
The Nazi ideal of a ‘people’s community’, which promised unity while excluding people the regime labelled racial or social outsiders.
