Beauty of Labour

Beauty of Labour aimed to improve the working environment. Improvements included toilets, showers, changing rooms and canteens, as well as better lighting and ventilation. Such facilities could make workplaces cleaner and more comfortable and help increase productivity.

Beauty of Labour, introduced in 1934, encouraged employers to improve facilities such as toilets, showers and canteens. By 1938, about 34,000 companies had improved their facilities. However, workers were sometimes expected to carry out the improvements themselves, outside normal hours and without extra pay.
