An inspection checking whether clergy and churches were following religious requirements.
Revise: The Religious SettlementOfficials carried out visitations, or inspections, to check that clergy had taken the oath and that services followed the settlement. The first visitation in 1559 resulted in about 400 clergy losing their positions. Later visitations took place roughly every three to four years.

An official inspection of a religious institution. Cromwell’s monastic visitations of 1535 investigated moral and religious standards.
Revise: The Process of Dissolution and the Valor EcclesiasticusA separate investigation took place in 1535: the Visitation of the Monasteries. Cromwell sent commissioners to inspect moral and religious standards. Their reports alleged sexual misconduct, corruption and neglect of religious duties.
Distinguish the two investigations of 1535: the Valor Ecclesiasticus assessed wealth and income; the visitations investigated religious conduct.
