Used by AQA
Paper 2
Revise: InvasionFrom the late eighth century, Viking raiders from Scandinavia attacked Anglo-Saxon England. England was not yet a single unified kingdom: Wessex, Mercia and Northumbria had their own rulers. Viking invasions therefore challenged several kingdoms rather than one English government.
Separate Viking motives from methods: seeking plunder explains why raiders attacked; ships and military victories explain how they reached England and gained control.
Distinguish early raids, later settlement and Cnut’s conquest: Viking involvement in England changed over time.
