Political marriage

In 1002, Æthelred married Emma of Normandy, the sister of the Duke of Normandy. This political marriage was intended to strengthen his position and gain Norman support against the Vikings. It connected the English royal family with a powerful family across the Channel, but did not prevent further attacks.
