Revise: Case Studies: Conscientious Objectors and Derek BentleyAround 16,000 men applied as conscientious objectors. They had to explain their beliefs to a military service tribunal, a panel which decided whether they should receive exemption and on what conditions.

An official panel that examines evidence and makes a decision. In Britain in 1939–40, tribunals assessed whether German and Austrian residents posed a security risk.
Revise: ‘Aliens’ and refugeesMost were initially left at liberty. However, tribunal decisions could be influenced by prejudice, language barriers or an official’s attitude towards refugees, so individual assessment did not guarantee fair treatment.
For a comparison, make a direct point about both wars: tribunals operated in both, but their approach was generally more sympathetic in the Second World War. Support the comparison with specific treatment or work examples.
