Civil defence

Civil defence aimed to protect civilians and help them cope with attacks. Air-raid shelters offered places to take refuge, while community organisations and churches assisted displaced people and comforted those who were frightened. Shelter use itself changed daily routines, bringing the possibility of sudden death into ordinary civilian life.
