Revise: AfghanistanThe Taliban’s rise grew out of Afghanistan’s prolonged warfare and the collapse of effective government. After Soviet forces withdrew, Mohammad Najibullah’s communist government continued fighting mujahideen groups: armed Islamic resistance groups that had opposed Soviet intervention. Najibullah’s government fell in 1992, but the victorious factions then fought one another for control.
