Operation Enduring Freedom

On 7 October 2001, the United States and Britain launched Operation Enduring Freedom. The campaign combined air attacks on Taliban and al-Qaeda positions with small special-forces teams and the ground forces of the Northern Alliance. This alliance consisted of Afghan opponents of the Taliban, including mainly Tajik, Uzbek and Hazara groups which had already been fighting the regime.
