Sultan

Seljuk rulers used the title sultan, rather than replacing the Abbasid caliph. They recognised the caliph’s position, but real political and military authority rested with them. This distinction is crucial: the person recognised as religious leader was not necessarily the person commanding armies or governing the territory.
