Advocate of the Holy Sepulchre

Godfrey’s position is usually distinguished from that of a crowned king. He is commonly described as Advocate of the Holy Sepulchre: a protector of the church associated with Christ’s burial place. His precise title and its use are disputed, but the important distinction is between Godfrey’s initial rule and the explicit kingship of his successor, Baldwin.
