Revise: Increased TensionBritish troops remained in the Suez Canal zone because the canal was an important international shipping route. An agreement in October 1954 provided for their withdrawal by June 1956. Egypt agreed to respect freedom of navigation, while the agreement allowed British troops to return under specified circumstances if the canal was threatened.
