A programme introduced in South Vietnam in 1962 that relocated rural people into fortified settlements, aiming to separate them from the Vietcong and strengthen support for Diem.

Revise: Reasons for InvolvementIntroduced by Diem in March 1962, with American support, the Strategic Hamlet Program attempted to cut the connections between rural communities and the Vietcong. Villagers were moved into fortified settlements surrounded by barriers such as ditches and barbed wire.
Distinguish the Strategic Hamlet Program’s aims from its results. It was intended to weaken the Vietcong, but forced relocation increased hostility towards Diem.
Use precise supporting details, such as Diem’s refusal to hold reunification elections in 1956, the launch of the Strategic Hamlet Program in March 1962 and the growth to about 16,000 US advisers by the end of 1963.
