Revise: Reasons for InvolvementThe Geneva Accords of 1954 temporarily divided Vietnam at the 17th parallel. Ho Chi Minh controlled the communist North; in the South, the USA backed the anti-communist Ngo Dinh Diem, who became prime minister in 1954. Elections were planned for 1956 to reunite the country.
