Revise: The Sharpeville Massacre and Its ImpactOn 30 March, the government declared a state of emergency and banned public meetings. Police and soldiers arrested thousands of people; by 6 May, approximately 18,000 people had been detained under emergency powers. In April 1960, the ANC and PAC were banned under the Unlawful Organisations Act.
