Revise: Early ChallengesThe ‘stab in the back’ theory turned this resentment into a powerful accusation. It claimed that Germany’s army had not really been defeated but had been betrayed by civilians at home, particularly politicians who accepted surrender. The army’s retreat without an enemy conquest of Germany helped make this claim convincing to some people.
