A system in which people are treated as property, deprived of freedom and forced to work for others.
Revise: Differences Between the North and SouthSlavery was central to these divisions. It connected disagreements about work, wealth, society and political power. The conflict cannot simply be reduced to an industrial North opposing an agricultural South: both regions had farming, and neither population held a single set of views.
