Shia Islam

Two important branches of Islam were Sunni and Shia Islam. Their differences concerned religious leadership as well as belief. The Sunni Abbasid caliphs were recognised as leaders of the Muslim community, but did not claim the special spiritual authority and insight that the Shia Fatimid rulers claimed as imams.
