American Search and Destroy operations aimed to locate Vietcong fighters and destroy their bases, tunnels and supplies. Helicopters allowed troops to move rapidly into areas where enemy activity was suspected. Soldiers then searched villages and surrounding countryside for fighters or evidence of Vietcong activity.
