Paper 1
An area of a front line that projects into enemy-held territory.
Revise: The Western FrontThe Germans held high ground around the Ypres Salient, a section of the Allied line projecting into enemy-held territory. Haig wanted to capture that ground, break out of the salient and advance towards the German-held Belgian coastal ports. These ports mattered because they supported German U-boat operations against British shipping.
Paper 1

Revise: The British Sector and the Trench SystemThe British sector was part of a much larger battlefront, not a separate battlefield. Its important locations included the Ypres salient, the Somme, Arras and Cambrai, within the theatre of war in Flanders and northern France.
