Revise: The Western FrontAt Passchendaele, General Herbert Plumer used ‘bite and hold’: attacks aimed at limited sections of the German line, followed by securing the captured ground before further advances. These developments show that Western Front warfare was not simply an unchanging repetition of one method. New weapons mattered, but their effectiveness depended on how infantry, artillery and other forces worked together.
