Sacred precinct

At the heart of Tenochtitlan stood a walled sacred precinct, surrounded by four principal residential quarters. Its temples, ceremonial spaces and monuments made religion a highly visible part of city life. White-plastered buildings, gardens and waterways added to the city’s striking appearance.
