Revise: WarThe Dutch used fireships in the Raid on the Medway in 1667. At the Battle of Solebay in 1672, during the Third Dutch War, a Dutch fireship attack burned the English Royal James, killing the Earl of Sandwich. Fireships could cause devastating losses, but they did not always destroy their targets: they could also disrupt or harass an enemy fleet.
