Revise: WarLarge warships carrying many heavy guns were known as ships of the line. Their cannon could fire a broadside, meaning fire from the guns along one side of the ship. This made the ship’s position in relation to the enemy important: bringing its side towards a target allowed it to use its broadside guns.
