Paper 3
Revise: Racial Ideology and the Roots of AbolitionismIn 1671, before the main period of this depth study, the Quaker George Fox encountered slavery during a visit to Barbados. He urged Friends to treat enslaved people ‘mildly and gently’ and to free them after a number of years of service. His position challenged permanent enslavement, but still accepted a period of unfree labour: it was not a demand for immediate freedom.
- Revise: Attempts at Settlement and the Rise of Radicalism
A religious movement associated with George Fox which taught that God guided individuals directly through an Inner Light, rejecting church hierarchy and encouraging women as well as men to speak at meetings.
