Plug bayonet

The plug bayonet, a seventeenth-century invention, was a blade inserted into the musket’s muzzle. It effectively turned the firearm into a pike for close combat. Combining shooting and thrusting functions in one weapon reduced the need for separate pikemen, who were gradually phased out.
