Revise: Methods Used to Combat Plague in NorwichPlague pits were large graves used for mass burials when deaths overwhelmed normal burial arrangements. Mass burial was a response used during the period when communities could no longer keep up with individual funerals and burials. It helped them deal with bodies quickly, rather than curing people who were still infected.
Use Norwich’s own cleaning and burial examples: the 1625 order to scour ditches and remove nuisances, street cleansing in 1636, and burial of pesthouse victims at St Peter at Southgate in 1630. Describe the Lakenham remains as a possible 1665 plague pit, not a proven one. Burial totals and parish registers do not establish that a mass grave was used.
