Revise: Case Studies: William Harvey and the Great PlaguePhysicians recommended prayer, fasting, eating sage and garlic, and carrying a pomander. Sweet-smelling herbs such as mint and the smell of tobacco were used to counter supposed miasma. These measures made sense within contemporary explanations of disease, but they did not address its true cause.
