Revise: Methods Used to Combat Plague in NorwichPeople unable or unwilling to remain isolated at home could be placed in pesthouses on Butter Hills, where food, water and supervision were also provided.
Use Norwich’s own cleaning and burial examples: the 1625 order to scour ditches and remove nuisances, street cleansing in 1636, and burial of pesthouse victims at St Peter at Southgate in 1630. Describe the Lakenham remains as a possible 1665 plague pit, not a proven one. Burial totals and parish registers do not establish that a mass grave was used.
