Paper 2
Revise: Religious Refugees and Global Trade MigrationThe Palatines came from the German Rhine valley, especially the Palatinate and neighbouring regions. Their reasons for leaving combined religious persecution with war and economic hardship. French attacks damaged the region, and Protestants faced oppressive treatment under a Catholic ruler.
Paper 1
A migrant associated with the Palatinate and surrounding Rhineland in central Europe. Large numbers arrived in England in 1709.
Revise: Protestant refugeesTwo important groups were the Huguenots, French Protestants, and the Palatines, migrants from the Palatinate and surrounding Rhineland in central Europe, now part of Germany. Their experiences show both the importance and the limits of religious solidarity.
Use contrasts to support judgements: Huguenots often gained support and prospered, whereas impoverished Palatines lost their initial welcome.
When discussing Palatines, distinguish their reception in England from their later settlement in Ireland and onward migration to America.
Do not describe all Palatines as Protestants or give religious persecution as their only reason for migrating. War, poor harvests and hopes of land in America also mattered.
