Revise: Religious Refugees and Global Trade MigrationThe Huguenots were French Protestants. Refugees had reached England earlier, but persecution under the Catholic king Louis XIV brought a further major movement from the 1670s onwards. Restrictions included the destruction of Protestant churches and exclusion from professions.

Revise: Protestant refugeesTwo important groups were the Huguenots, French Protestants, and the Palatines, migrants from the Palatinate and surrounding Rhineland in central Europe, now part of Germany. Their experiences show both the importance and the limits of religious solidarity.
Support explanations of migration with a specific cause and consequence: for example, the revocation of the Edict of Nantes in 1685 and Huguenot contributions to the Bank of England in 1694.
Distinguish religious persecution from economic pressure. Huguenots fled persecution, while Highland tenants were displaced by changes in estate management and worsening hardship.
England was not the only Protestant destination available to Huguenots.
