Revise: Migration PatternsWorkers could be recruited as indentured labourers: they were bound to work under a contract for a set period. This was different from both unrestricted wage employment and slavery. A contract placed limits on workers' freedom to leave, so describing all imperial labour migration as freely chosen would conceal important differences in power and control.
