Long-standing Bolshevik Party members who had worked with Lenin before or during the 1917 Revolution.

Old Bolsheviks were particularly threatening because they had worked with Lenin and possessed revolutionary reputations independent of Stalin. Removing them reduced the possibility of an alternative leadership emerging.
